What is muscle soreness after exercise?
Delayed-onset muscle soreness (=DOMS) is the tenderness, stiffness or aching that can develop after unfamiliar or strenuous exercise. It is particularly common after exercises with a strong eccentric component, where a muscle produces force while lengthening — for example lowering a weight, running downhill or performing the downward phase of a squat.
DOMS is not caused by lactic acid remaining in the muscles. It is associated with the response of muscle and surrounding tissue to unfamiliar mechanical stress.
These are known as eccentric muscle actions. A high volume of eccentric exercise is strongly associated with temporary soreness and a short-term reduction in muscle function, especially when the movement or training load is new to you.

The duration varies according to the exercise, training load, muscle group and your experience with the movement. Pain that begins suddenly during one repetition, sprint or landing may be more consistent with an acute strain or another injury than with delayed muscle soreness.
Is muscle soreness a sign of a good workout?
Not necessarily.
Soreness mainly tells you that your muscles experienced a load they were not fully accustomed to. That may happen because you trained harder, used a new exercise, increased your range of motion or returned after a break.
Once your body becomes accustomed to the same activity, you may experience much less soreness even though the training is still effective. No muscle soreness therefore does not mean you failed to train hard enough.
Progress is better measured through indicators such as:
• improved strength or endurance;
• more controlled technique;
• a greater but manageable training load;
• better consistency;
• improved performance in your sport;
• how well you recover between sessions.
Deliberately chasing extreme muscle soreness can make everyday movement difficult and reduce the quality of your next training session.
Can you exercise with sore muscles?
That depends on the intensity of the soreness and the type of training you have planned. Light physical activity may temporarily reduce stiffness and make the muscles feel more comfortable. That does not mean the muscle has instantly recovered.

3. Food and fluids

You do not need a complicated recovery meal. A normal meal or snack containing a source of protein, carbohydrates and fluids is a practical starting point.

When is muscle pain not normal?
